County Venture Hike Cuilcagh

Picture
The Erne County Venture Hike was held in the Cuilcagh Mountain park on the 27th of February. A good turnout from Enniskillen, Lisnaskea and Irvinestown Ventures enjoyed an early start on Sunday morning as they embarked on Cuilcagh. Along the way they developed their mountaineering skills and picked up a few tips on Teamwork and Leadership. At the summit, the Ventures cooked lunch on Trangias, (some more successful than others!) and enjoyed the views of Fermanagh. The otherwise perfect day was not spoilt by some brief Hail and Wind on the Mountain and the ventures thoroughly enjoyed their experience and are keen to get out again. All the Ventures and the County would like to thank event co-ordinator David Hopkins who did an excellent job and without whom the event would not have happened.

Scouting Ireland’s highest accolade awarded to
Erne County Chairman
Joe Owens

Picture
Erne County Chairman Joe Owens has been bestowed the highest National accolade in Scouting Ireland, The Order of Cú Cuchullain.
Joe was only one of seven people from all over Ireland to be awarded this prestigious award during Scouting Irelands National Council (AGM) . The award was presented in front of 700+ delegates from all over Ireland.
This was joe's Commendation

Joe has been one of the most influential, committed, and outstanding leaders this association has ever had the privilege to have in its ranks.
Unit /Group Level
Joe started his scouting career as the unit chairman in St Michaels Unit in the Diocese of Clogher back in the 1970’s. Joe then became a leader a few years later and has remained ever since. He has been one of the building blocks not only within this thriving Scout Group but also in the Erne Region/County for the past 30 years. Joe has held many positions in the Group and the Region over the years. As stated above he started at group level in the role of Unit Chairman but then took the mantel of both assistant and Section Leader as well as Unit leader of one of the largest scout groups within the island of Ireland. Joe was also instrumental during the building of the new St Michaels Scout Centre back in 1994 with his wealth of building knowledge.
Region/County Level
Joe has also held a few Positions at Regional/County level. They are as follows Assistant Regional Commissioner, Regional Secretary and 7 years as Regional Commissioner.  Joe is now my County Chairman which he carries out with outstanding commitment even at the ripe young age of 73.
Joe has always been at the forefront of the Region always pushing for development, with his strong hand on delegation and making sure all the jobs where carried out. Joe also made sure that his unit leaders did not lose sight of the reason why we are in the movement i.e. the young people.

In Joe’s personal life he makes sure he lives by the Scout values that he has learnt over the years. I feel Joe has been outstanding in his positions as a manager of people, and a positive male role model and leader of young people that he has lead over the past 30 years. Joe was awarded the gold medal of merit back in 2001
I would be greatly appreciative if you would consider awarding Joe Owens the Order of Cú Cuchullain as he is a most worthy recipient of this award.

Patrol Leaders Training Weekend

Picture
On the weekend of the 6th 7th and 8th of November it was to give torrential rain, gale force winds and freezing tempetures.  It did not look good for the Patrol leader Training. Yet Nine Brave Patrol Leaders from Kinawley Dowra and Lisnaskea ventured on towards Share Holiday Village in these harsh weather conditions, their reason to better themselves as Patrol Leaders.

Their courage (and some may say stupidity to camp in such conditions) was repaided by having a fun filled weekend. Jam packed with games and bases, little tasks  in bettering your leadership skills. We managed to fit in rafting, shelter buliding, campfires, Games, More importantly Marshmallows and hot chocolate and a little time for X factor as a reward.

And that Big scout leader in the sky looked after us by giving us some great weather.  The Scouts slept better in the shelters on the Saturday night than they did the friday, in the Tents. So much so we had to drag them out of their sleeping bags. You would'nt have thought that the water was freeeezzzzzing or it was november judging by the fact that all the scouts went for a swim after the rafting

Finally a big thank you to all you came to the weekend you made it very special and more thanks to the people who helped out, you know who you are so CHEERS!!
